1. Why tradition called number 'vibration counted'
In the sixth century BCE, the school of Pythagoras observed that musical harmony is governed by whole-number ratios: divide a stretched string in half (2:1) and it sounds an octave higher; divide it in a 3:2 ratio and it sounds a pure fifth; in 4:3, a fourth. As recorded by later classical authors such as Nicomachus of Gerasa and Boethius, this discovery inspired the philosophical view that number is the hidden architecture of order.
Modern numerology draws on that symbolic heritage. Rather than treating numbers merely as quantities for accounting, it reads each digit from 1 to 9 — along with the Master Numbers 11, 22 and 33 — as a distinct archetype of human experience.
Number is vibration counted. Your birth date holds the rhythm of the day you arrived.
2. How to calculate your Life Path number step by step
The cleanest way to calculate your Life Path number — the method used by our free calculator — reduces each part of your birth date (Month, Day and Year) first, and then adds the three parts together. Whenever you see 11, 22 or 33, you stop reducing that number.
Take the example of someone born on October 28, 1994:
- Step 1 — Reduce the Month: October is month 10 → 1 + 0 = 1.
- Step 2 — Reduce the Day: 28 → 2 + 8 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1. (If the day were 11 or 22, you would keep it as 11 or 22.)
- Step 3 — Reduce the four-digit Year: 1994 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 4 = 23 → 2 + 3 = 5.
- Step 4 — Add the three reduced numbers: 1 + 1 + 5 = 7. This person carries a Life Path 7.

4. How your Life Path works with your name numbers
Your birth date never changes, which makes the Life Path the road itself. Your full name at birth adds three companion numbers that describe how you walk that road: your Expression number (all the letters of your name, showing your natural talents), your Soul Urge number (the vowels, showing what moves you inside) and your Personality number (the consonants, showing how others first meet you).
When you enter your birth name and birth date in our free Birth Chart calculator, the Numbers tab computes all four numbers at once and explains how they converse with your Sun, Moon and Rising sign.

Questions & answers
Frequently asked questions
Does my Life Path number ever change?
No. Because it is calculated from the month, day and year of your birth, your Life Path number stays with you for your entire life. Your Personal Year number, however, changes every year.
What are Master Numbers in numerology?
The double-digit numbers 11, 22 and 33 are called Master Numbers. They carry both their own heightened potential and the grounding foundation of their single-digit root (2, 4 and 6).
Which name should I use for my other numerology numbers?
Traditional numerology uses the full name written on your birth certificate to calculate your Expression, Soul Urge and Personality numbers, as it reflects the original vibration of your naming.
Why do two methods sometimes give a different Master Number?
Adding all eight digits of a birth date straight across can obscure or artificially create a Master Number. Reducing the month, day and year separately first respects the three distinct cycles of the calendar.
